The feuding Montague and Capulet families were sworn enemies for years. Graduates from Lehigh University and Lafayette College know that feeling.

Yet, Andrew Klein ’11 ’12G and Melissa Heller have managed to put The Rivalry aside and fall in love. Of course, minus the poison, death, and general dreariness of a Shakespearean tale.

October 13, 2018, Andrew and Melissa, a 2011 graduate from Lafayette, married in Closter, N.J..

The newlyweds met in 2015 through a dating app called Hinge. Hinge uses connections to Facebook friends to identify romantic matches. Having many friends go to schools only miles apart, Andrew and Melissa’s found “love at first swipe”.

During their wedding reception, Andrew Klein ’11 ’12G and his bride Melissa Heller took a group photo with many of their friends who also attended Lehigh University and Lafayette College.
At their wedding, Andrew and Melissa posed for a group photo with several college friends.

Andrew and Melissa have experienced three Lehigh-Lafayette Rivalry games together. The couple either attends a New York City alumni telecast party or travels to their alma maters. They also always include their college friends, which can lead to some fun moments.

“There’s a fair amount of school spirit on each side,” Andrew said, who once wore a Lafayette t-shirt to a telecast party after losing a bet.

Aside from some light ribbing every November, Andrew and Melissa’s lives aren’t affected by The Rivalry. Some diehard fans might find that hard to believe.

Well…

“A girl is going to Lafayette,” Melissa laughed, talking about her and Andrew’s future children. “A boy can go to Lehigh.”

The Rivalry lives on.

  1. I have one brother. I’m Lehigh ‘72 (and P’08). My brother is Laffayette ‘76. Makes for interesting Thanksgiving dinners. 😄
